Lauren and Shaan’s Bengali-American Wedding at Black Swan Country Club

Some love stories begin with a spark. Others start with a swipe. For Lauren and Shaan, it was the latter—an online match in 2019 that neither of them had particularly high hopes for. Both were exhausted from years of bad dates and cynical about finding something real. But sometimes, when you least expect it, the right person comes along.

A First Date with a Tiny, Overpriced Appetizer

Their first date was at Little Donkey in Cambridge, where they ordered a $14 salmon appetizer—only to be served a portion the size of a half-dollar. They both burst into laughter, instantly relieved to discover they shared the same sense of humor (and an appreciation for food that’s actually worth the price). That moment set the tone for their relationship—grounded in humor, shared values, and a mutual commitment to making the world a better place.

Lauren, a writer and activist, spends her days organizing protests and events advocating for Palestinian rights. Shaan, an immigration lawyer, works tirelessly to ensure justice for those seeking a better life. Their shared passion for human rights is the foundation of their relationship, making their wedding not just a celebration of love, but also of purpose and commitment to their beliefs.

A Weeklong Bengali Celebration

Lauren and Shaan’s wedding wasn’t just a one-day event—it was a full week of Bengali wedding traditions, leading up to a vibrant ceremony and reception at Black Swan Country Club in Georgetown, Massachusetts. And while I wasn’t there for the first few days, I got to enjoy the final two which included the Sangeet on Friday night, and the Baraat, Puja and reception on Saturday. Both were nothing short of spectacular.

It was early September, the time of year where summer still lingers, but you can feel the crispness of fall creeping in. The sun was shining, the air was warm, and the energy was electric. It was the perfect way to wrap up a week filled with tradition, love, and celebration.

Tradition Meets Modern Elegance

The ceremony was a stunning blend of Bengali and American traditions. Lauren and Shaan honored Shaan’s heritage by wearing traditional Indian wedding attire—rich fabrics, intricate embroidery, and deep, vibrant colors. In many Indian wedding traditions, brides rock red. Not just because it’s stunning, but because it symbolizes love, prosperity, and new beginnings. It’s also tied to the fierce warrior goddess Durga, making it a color full of strength and meaning. Later, for the reception, they switched things up. Lauren changed into a fitted, dark forest green gown, while Shaan complemented her perfectly in a dark green velvet tux. The blend of cultures was reflected in their outfits, just as it was throughout the entire celebration.

The ceremony space was adorned with deep red roses, symbolizing love and passion. In contrast, the reception decor leaned more minimalistic—lush greenery that felt elegant and natural. Some tables featured towering centerpieces that looked like full, blossoming trees, bringing an organic, earthy touch to the ballroom.

But perhaps the most meaningful detail was the keffiyeh draped on their sweetheart table—a nod to their unwavering support for Palestinian justice. It wasn’t just decor; it was a statement about who they are and what they stand for.

A Day Bursting with Joy

From the moment the celebrations began, there was a buzz in the air. The laughter, the music, the unfiltered joy—it was impossible not to get swept up in the energy of the day. Bengali weddings are known for being high-energy, and this one was no exception. Between the lively dancing, the heartfelt speeches, and the endless smiles, it was clear that this was a wedding full of people who love deeply.

During the reception, friends and family shared stories about Lauren and Shaan—some funny, some deeply touching, all highlighting the incredible bond these two share.

Being part of their wedding was an honor. It wasn’t just about filming a beautiful day (though, trust me, it was beautiful). It was about capturing the love, the meaning, and the spirit behind it all. Lauren and Shaan, your wedding was unforgettable, and I have no doubt your life together will be just as extraordinary.
